Outhouse is structure at left in upper left picture. Lower section (middle left) consists of 2 bins, each about 3' x 3'. One for new material and one for turning and additional composting. The toilet is about 40' from the house and dug into a slope to allow level access from the house and also access to the composted material in the lower level. Inside (lower left) is the 'throne' with an 8" ventilating tube to keep odors out of the use area. Note bucket with peat moss. As KaDe says, "One cup is a country flush". Structure is a simple shed-roof with slab lumber siding. The ventilation tube extends about 6' above the roof and has a ventilating turbine to help pull odors out. Before use, the primary bin is layered with about 6" of straw and peat moss. The 'humanure' sits in the 'primary' bin for 1 year and then is transferred to a secondary bin for further composting for an additional year. At the end of the second year, the secondary bin is emptied and the composted material is put on the orchard trees. At this time, the primary bin is emptied into the secondary bin and the process begins anew. See the construction of the pavilion outhouse for a slightly different design. |
